I just got back from a camping trip to Fort Stevens in Oregon. The women's basketball team tries to go in the fall of each year as a bonding experience before the season starts. The weather in the Grove was about 80 degrees when we left and we arrived on the coast to overcast, 60 degree weather. It was actually quite nice though, it wasn't too cold and it luckily didn't rain on us! So, we spent a little time at the beach, playing with Erin's new golden retreiver puppy! It was Jake's first experience with a body of water!
After some time at the beach, we went back to the campsite and "bonded." :) We played a few little games to get to know eachother a little better since we have some new comers to the team. But don't worry girls, I won't share anything cause what's said in the circle, stays in the circle! :) he he.
We of course had to make a stop at the Nike outlet on the way back to school. I'm convinced some of those girls keep that store in business. My car luckily made it all the way back safely since the car started to give out while going up a hill due to an empty tank of gas! But us girls know the little secrets, like putting it in neutral and coasting down the hill! Whew! It was a close one. Now we're back in the Grove and ready to get serious about ball. Only 3 and a half weeks left!

Middle School Know-It-Alls
It's the 2nd week of basketball class at the middle school and there still is no consistent attendance. So, it is difficult to plan a lesson when some individuals don't always attend. Knowing that I have a wide range of skill level, including some kids that have never played basketball before, I am trying to incorporate easy skills to practice so that they can learn the basics before jumping into the game. Of course I have some of those 8th grade boys who are bored to death and don't understand why we need to work on things such as jump-stops, pivoting and passing. They just want to scrimmage and shoot. So, the experienced player that I am and having worked with many groups, including kids, I asked them what they would do, asked them to explain to those who don't know what to do and asked what they think we best need to work on as a group. It was amusing and exactly what I expected when they didn't know what they would do differently, they couldn't really explain in detail so others could understand and surprisingly gave valuable inputs to what we should work on.
I think it really pays off to listen to everyone, even the little people. You'll never get anywhere in life if you don't listen to the opinions and advice of other people, even if they are younger than you. You can never learn too much. Also, by asking them their opinion it lets them feel like they have some power and a say in what they are doing. The kids then can feel responsible and gain ownership in the end results, such as our performance in the final tournament.
This part-time job is becoming an excellent learning experience. Working with groups is always good practice and a skill one needs to have when working in the field of business. Business people interact with many people and must have the skill to compromise, listen and work together. What better practice than working with youth!

Piercings
I did it! I got a new piercing. After months of trying to decide what to get, I decided on the tongue rather than the nose or monroe. I've really wanted to get the monroe piercing because not many people have it, but i took the valuable advice of my friends and decided against it. I didn't go with the nose partially because many people have it, but mainly because i didn't want to upset my mom. I know, what a great daughter huh. The tongue isn't visible and no one needs to know you have it if you don't want to. Who looks at my tongue anyway!
So, I went to Black Hole Body Piercing with my friend and went through with it. I went first and I'm going to be honest, it was a little painful, but nothing you can't handle. Then my friend Desiree went and she was much more brave and got a verticle lebret piercing. That's where it starts in the lebret and comes up through the lip. She says that it was her least painful piercing, but i'm sure i would say otherwise. She's a tough one though. Now, the healing process is underway and I have a metal stud in my mouth.
If anyone is thinking of getting pierced, I would suggest Black Hole Body Piercing (www.blackholebodypiercing.com). They were very clean, professional, honest and informative. Good luck!

Movies and Gadgets
My brother treated me to a movie last night. Since I don't watch much TV at all, I didn't even know what movies were out. Luckily my brother has lots of free time and could give me a short summary of the movies we still had time to see. We picked Cellular, with Chris Evans and Kim Basinger, directed by David Ellis. I was hooked from the beginning and wasn't bored for a minute. I don't want to give the movie away, so I won't go into details. The whole thing was action packed. It is amazing to know what is possible with an object that fits in the palm of your hand, a cell phone. My phone takes pictures, has a calendar, internet capabilities and can record voices. After viewing this movie, I feel my phone is out of date and can't wait to get an updated one. Check out the films' website http://www.cellularthemovie.com. If you get a chance to go see it, I would definitely recommend it.
I started conditioning for basketball yesterday. Only 29 days left until the madness begins: the national start day for basketball practice. I play for our college team, Pacific University Boxers. This is my 4th year as a boxer and I believe this will be our most successful season. You can check out our schedule online and hopefully make it out to a game. http://goboxers.pacificu.edu/wbx/wbxsch.htm
Second day success at my job coaching basketball! I only had 18 middle-schoolers, but it felt just the same as 20. Even though it is only the second practice, I feel like they gained so much more. I've been coaching at basketball camps since my freshman year in high school, but I've never been the lone-ranger. I have these kids all to myself, trying to manage all of their skills and help them get better. It is much more difficult when you are THE COACH and not just A COACH. I'll keep updates and definitely post the results of the tournament.
On an end note, tomorrow is Friday and time to bring on the weekend! Two friends are coming to visit from home and I'm so excited!
If you get the chance, check out a band, Up Falls Down.

First Post
This is my first post in my new blog! Hopefully I will be able to keep this updated so that you can know what great things i do with my life. :) I promise I won't purposely try to bore you to death. If it happens, know that I'm really just trying to keep you coming back for more.
So I started my new job yesterday. It's a second job really. I'm coaching basketball through a rec center at a local middle school. I have 20 6th, 7th and 8th graders all to myself! It'll be a challenge due to the spread of skill level between all the kids, but I was ecstatic when each one of them accomplished the 3-man weave drill! I know some high-school kids that cannot grasp the concept of the drill. Now, lay-ups weren't rus as smoothly, but it was only the first day right! We have a tournament in 7 weeks agains the other middle schools, I'm anxious to see where we end up.
Well, nothing else too new to tell about. Except, my lil brother is coming to visit me tomorrow! :) He's going to attempt to help me with the middle-school kids. Oh, and crazy ass steve jackson may come to visit me this weekend :)
Happy Birthday Keith # 285! :)
